Rosehall Run 2007 Cuvee County Cabernet Franc - $18.95
Summertime, and the living is easy ... or so the song goes. This summer has been less than easy, especially for those seeking a few consecutive days of sun. In 2007 that was no problem - so today we're looking at an '07 red from Prince Edward County.
The Tasting Notes: This 2007 version is not about terroir, it’s about the fruit. It’s not about minerals, tobacco, sour cherry or green pepper, it’s about beautifully ripe fruit that smells of fresh raspberries and delivers the same big jammy sensation on the tongue. This wine is all about pure pleasure and simple enjoyment. Price: $18.95 – Rating: ****

Rosehall Run 2006 Pinot Noir (Rosehall Vineyard) - $29.95
Dan Sullivan, owner and winemaker of Rosehall Run in Prince Edward County, continues his impressive run as a pioneering winemaker in the county. I found this Pinot to be pure heaven, from the snout clean on down to the gullet; even the light red colour is enticing. Beautiful smoky-vanilla-red fruit greet the nose – nothing overpowering, just sweet and subtle. In the mouth there are cherries of all varieties (black, red, sweet, sour) and they just kick right in, there’s also a slight tart cranberry background and a steady seam of vanilla oak. I shouldn’t fail to mention the sour cherry finish that lingers for quite a-piece after you swallow; and the just-right amount of tannins; no shaving your tongue after this one. I’d say it’s one of my favourite Pinots I’ve ever had, it had great throw-your-head-backability as you take sip after sip, and drink glass after glass.

Rosehall Run 2004 Top Barriques Chardonnay- $18.95
Chardonnay has never been a friend of mine, or I of it, I’ve never hidden that fact from anyone (ask to see my ABC membership card – Anything But Chardonnay) … so when I find an interesting Chardonnay I’m the first to scream it from the rooftops. This one, from this Prince Edward County winery, is actually made from 24-year-old vines grown in Niagara; the “top barriques” part, well that just means best barrels. So this best barrels, old vines Chard has got some real character to it. Notes of asparagus, celery, lettuce, pea pods, almonds and over ripe tree fruit on the nose; with vegetal (especially the pea pods), almonds, peach pits and wet stone on the palate. A medium long finish helps it to linger pleasantly in the mouth and your enjoyment of it continues through each swallow. This one is not only an interesting wine, it’s quite tasty too.

Rosehall Run 2005 Sullyzwicker (74% Riesling/26% Ehrenfelser) - $14.95
I have, since I was a lad, enjoyed apple juice. Unfortunately these days the only time I take comfort in apple juice is when I am under-the-weather, laid up in bed with a sore throat and aches and pains. Apple juice has come to signify wellness and feeling better to me, it is my “comfort food”. Also because of my love for apple juice I have an affinity for well-made apple wine. After that preamble let me say that Sullyzwicker is not an apple wine, it’s 76% Riesling and 26% Ehrenfelser, but it tastes and smalls exactly like a macintosh-based apple juice with a kick. I swear to the good Lord above that 1) there are no apples used in the making of this wine and 2) it tastes like there should be. So let’s recap: love apple juice, love apple wine, Sullyzwicker tastes like apple wine, therefore if you are like me you should love this wine. If you can make the same leap of logic that I just did my suggestion is buy it, drink it, love it. Enjoy with a light snack of cheese and crackers on a lazy Sunday afternoon, or on its own, the low alcohol will make sure you’ll be clearheaded and coherent come dinner time. Rosehall Run 2004 Buckthorn Red - $14.95
Rosehall Run is definitely on of the wineries to watch in Prince Edward County. All the wines I have tried from their portfolio, be it from Niagara grapes or County grapes, have been of exceptional quality. They, like Long Dog, have the goal of one day being self sufficient in grapes and using out-of-County fruit only when they want to, not because of need. This all-county Zweigelt fulfills that wish … and admirably. There are only a handful of wineries making Zweigelt, and that’s too bad, because when made well these wines can be as flavourful and food friendly as any you’ve tried. This one is a great little quaffer, good for pizza or pasta nights. Well-balanced acidity with a raspberry and blackberry nose and taste. Available at the winery only.
