Jackson-Triggs 2007 Proprietors' Grand Reserve White Meritage - $24.95

Here's another for those who visit the Vintages section of the LCBO. In the March 14th release the focus was on Ontario whites, this one popped up and I thought you just might be interested in a White Meritage wine because you don't see them all that often. This week's Podcast explains what a White Meritage is, and as always it's worth a listen ... for those who chose the easy way out, you can read the brief tasting note below (the Podcast is always more interesting):

This wine is loaded with fruits like lime, apple and pear, which you'll find on both the nose and palate. The citrus is in the nose while the palate offers up a plethora of fruit … great mouthfeel that coats and fills with rich flavours.

Jackson Triggs 2006 Delaine Vineyard Chardonnay - $19.95

Despite all the bad-mouthing Chardonnay gets it still retains the title of the number one selling white wine in the world – and the most widely planted. The ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) movement started as a backlash to those overly oaky wines from both Australia and the U.S. – but it really is hard to find fault with a well made, gently oaked beauty of a Chardonnay, because, in truth, those are the things about it that made this grape and its wines so popular. Which brings us to this Jackson Triggs Delaine Vineyard Chardonnay. Some say the Delaine Vineyard may be the best in Ontario, I’ll leave that debate in others hands; though I have to admit, I rarely if ever taste a bad bottle of wine with the Delaine designation on it – this Chard is no exception. This is Chardonnay elegance personified with delicious fruit and a great lingering finish. There’s a fantastic citrus component here along with a deft hand in the use of soft oak. One of the nicest Chardonnays I’ve had in a while.

Jackson-Triggs 2006 Proprietors’ Reserve Sauvignon Blanc - $13.95

I bought this bottle during the intermission of the Philosopher Kings concert at Jackson-Triggs because it was the wine I had sipped on throughout the show. A week later I opened it with some trepidation – worried that I might have had “good-time-wine syndrome” when I bought it: you know the feeling, you have a good time drinking a wine due to your surroundings or the company you were with and the next time you try it you wonder, “did I really like this wine?” – the wine just doesn’t taste the same, in fact it tastes like … well, I’m sure you have your own term. Fortunately, that was not the case, it still had the lemon, grapefruit, nectarine, mineral and hint of cat’s pee on the nose that I had grown to love sitting in my chair at the amphitheatre. A tart lemon start, grapefruit tang n the middle and lime zip at the end in the mouth. Refreshing on yet another summer afternoon … and just for good measure I had the Philosopher Kings playing on the stereo.
