Oak Heights 2007 Cabernet Franc

If you think it's all about Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in and around Prince Edward County, think again.

The Tasting Notes: The wine is very easy going on the palate – the nose, or lack thereof, leaves a little something to be desired, but the palate more than makes up for it with raspberry, black cherry - sweet juicy fruits. Rating: ****

33 Vines 2007 Cabernet Franc - $24.00

Here's a wine I tried during the wine writers trip to Prince Edward County ... turns out the County isn't just about Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The Tasting Notes: The nose is cherry, blackberry with a touch of vanilla-oak and some floral-smokiness. The palate was also quite good, offering up cherry-tobacco, black fruit toasty-smoky oak, hints of mineral with good acid and tannin grit on the finish. Price: $24.00 – Rating: ***½

Rosehall Run 2007 Cuvee County Cabernet Franc - $18.95

Summertime, and the living is easy ... or so the song goes. This summer has been less than easy, especially for those seeking a few consecutive days of sun. In 2007 that was no problem - so today we're looking at an '07 red from Prince Edward County.

The Tasting Notes: This 2007 version is not about terroir, it’s about the fruit. It’s not about minerals, tobacco, sour cherry or green pepper, it’s about beautifully ripe fruit that smells of fresh raspberries and delivers the same big jammy sensation on the tongue. This wine is all about pure pleasure and simple enjoyment. Price: $18.95 – Rating: ****

The Grange of Prince Edward County 2007 Cabernet Franc Northfield Block - $29.80

Today it's off to Prince Edward County to try a single vineyard Cabernet Franc ... let's see how my favourite Ontario grape does in the best vintage Ontario has ever seen.

The Tasting Notes: The nose seems almost simplistic, with cherry, tobacco and vanills taking charge of the olfactories. The palate offers up a little something extra – nice sweet fruit flavours, soft on the palate, with no harsh tannins – along with hints of mocha, vanilla and cherry on the finish. Price: $29.80 – Rating: ****

Rosehall Run 2006 Pinot Noir (Rosehall Vineyard) - $29.95

Dan Sullivan, owner and winemaker of Rosehall Run in Prince Edward County, continues his impressive run as a pioneering winemaker in the county. I found this Pinot to be pure heaven, from the snout clean on down to the gullet; even the light red colour is enticing. Beautiful smoky-vanilla-red fruit greet the nose – nothing overpowering, just sweet and subtle. In the mouth there are cherries of all varieties (black, red, sweet, sour) and they just kick right in, there’s also a slight tart cranberry background and a steady seam of vanilla oak. I shouldn’t fail to mention the sour cherry finish that lingers for quite a-piece after you swallow; and the just-right amount of tannins; no shaving your tongue after this one. I’d say it’s one of my favourite Pinots I’ve ever had, it had great throw-your-head-backability as you take sip after sip, and drink glass after glass.

Bella Vigne 2006 Leon Millot / Foch - $15.95

Last year winemaker/grower/owner Pat Del-Gatto of Bella Vigne in Prince Edward County made a lip-smackingly good Millot / Zweigelt blend. Not realizing how good it was going to be and frustration with his Zweigelt grapes, he ripped them out of his vineyard. Now. how do you follow up a wonderful tasty wine like that without the whole cast? Easy, take a page out of Hollywood’s book - bring back the star (Leon) and give him a different supporting cast (Foch) – they’ve been doing it on TV and in the movies for years. Now an 85/15 Leon / Foch blend you’ll find this wine has lots of earthy raspberry and strawberry notes with a touch of Fochness – but not enough to be off-putting. It’s smooth in the mouth and benefits from about half-an-hour in the fridge. What’s more 2 years in the cellar would benefit its smoothness factor. Enjoy now or lie down, it’s your choice … buy 2 and you can do both – and as the old knight said to Indiana Jones on his last crusade, “You have chosen wisely.”

The Grange of Prince Edward County Trumpour’s Mill 2005 Cabernet/Merlot - $17.95

The wines from 2005 have so far been amazing: good concentration of fruit and lush tannins in the reds; great fruity flavours in the whites – especially the Rieslings. Last year, the Grange won me over with their 2004 version of this wine, and the 2005 is even better. The blend is still the same, 40% each of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon with the remaining 20% being held up by the Merlot. Initially, this wine seems a little closed off, showing only black fruit (black raspberries) and coffee on the nose – but after an hour the fruit begins to poke its way through with raspberries and strawberries emerging. The first hour shows similarly on the palate, dusty mouth-drying tannins along with some black fruit and oak. Give it that hour and feel it smooth out a little, developing some chocolate notes. This wine can definitely use some bottle age to mellow I would say 3-5 years should do nicely. Available at the winery.

Sandbanks Estate Winery 2005 Baco Noir - $19.95

Before we begin the Baco Noir Challenge I thought we should look at a Baco Noir wine, one that has not been entered for the Crown. Sandbanks is a new winery located in Prince Edward County run by Catherine Langlois out of what I can only assume is the basement of her home; a home which is surrounded by acres of vineyards (see newsletter #38 for a full winery review). She admitted to me that this wine also contained 10% Geisenheim (a white grape variety) which adds to the smoothness of this wine, but is not listed on the label. The nose has smoky, woodsy, earthy and black cherry notes, while inside the mouth a black cherry beginning ends with a tart raspberry finish. Smooth, easy texture with a hint of sweetness, but still clocks in at a zero. How her wine does during the challenge we shall soon see. Available at the winery only.
