Stoney Ridge 2008 Petit Verdot - $28.00

Today's Weekly Wine Note is about a grape variety that we seldom see on a label of Ontario wine.

The Tasting Notes: This wine is fairly easy going, with lots of sour cherry and raspberry fruit, and a touch of spice.  For the record 10% Cabernet Sauvignon was added to the wine.  Price: $28.00 – Rating: ***½

Cattail Creek 2007 Merlot Reserve - $40.00

For those of you on the hunt for more 2007 reds, and ones to lie down for a little bit ... this one's for you; on the other hand, if you have a decanter or a big glass and a big piece of meat - this one would be for you too.

The Tasting Notes: The aromas are smoky, black raspberry with hints of cocoa; on the palate there’s the blackberry and smokiness with that cocoa wrapped in vanilla and all layered with a touch tannins for structure. Price: $40.00 – Rating: ****

The week before Valentine's Day seems the perfect time to have the Love it or Hate it grape, Pinot Noir, otherwise known as the Heartbreak Grape.

The Tasting Notes: Smoky, leathery and barnyard aromas lead to classic flavours of cherry, cranberry and earthy nuances all wrapped up in some pretty drying tannins. Price: $15.00 – Rating: ***½

Daredevil Wines 2007 Cabernet - $36.00

Another virtual winery has hit the market, so it's time to take a look at their inaugural vintage ... this Cabernet is from that monster 2007 vintage you've heard so much about. I think that's a good omen for a winery to make their debut wine in a good year and bodes well for the future.

The Tasting Notes: I got cranberry, sour cherry, black licorice and earthy aromas, followed by red fruit, some spice, slight yet smooth tannins and good acidity. Price: $36.00 – Rating: ***½
